The Kookaburra, which is native to Australia and New Guinea, are characterized by their large heads, stout bodies, prominent eyes, and a large bill. In nature, they are distinguished by their easily recognizable call, which mimics human laughter. Minted since 1990, the top-rated Kookaburra series contains 9999 fine silver and has featured the lovable avian in various poses since then.

The Perth Mint opened in 1899 as the British Royal Mint’s 3rd branch in Australia. The historical Hay Street location handled gold refining until moving to a modern facility in April 1990. Ownership of the mint was transferred to the Government of Western Australia in July of 1970.
